Determining a child custody schedule that works for everyone

When parents in New Mexico who get a divorce are deciding how they will divide their time with the children, the most logical approach to a 50/50 parenting plan might seem to be having the child alternate weeks with each parent. However, this is not always the case, particularly for children who are younger than 12 years old. A week can be a long time for a child and may cause some separation anxiety.

Parents may also struggle with an every-other-week schedule of getting the child to and from school or finding child care for alternating weeks. A better schedule for both parents and children might be a more frequent one. For example, a 3-4-4-3 schedule allows parents to have children three or four days per week, switching each week. A 2-2-3 schedule lets the child spend five days per week with one parent and two with the other, switching the following week and never spending more than three days at a time away from either parent.

Some parents may find that a 50/50 schedule is simply not practical for them. Something that is closer to 60/40 might work better. The child could spend long weekends with one parent and weekdays with the other or might spend two days weekly with one parent and five with the other.

Parents may struggle to reach an agreement on child custody and visitation since it can be the most emotional factor in a divorce. However, they may be able to do so without going to court if they can stay focused on the best interests of the child. This gives them the opportunity to create a more flexible solution that suits them and their family. Attorneys may be able to assist in these negotiations or even conduct them on behalf of parents.
